What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a form of treatment which is designed to help individuals or groups address their emotional distress through talk therapy.  The purpose of talking is to help individuals get in touch with thoughts or feelings that are interfering with the ability to maintain a healthy relationship.

How can psychotherapy help?

The basic concept of psychotherapy is that emotional distress has its roots in unresolved conflicts.  These conflicts hold you back from achieving your goals and affect the way you feel about yourself.  Often the inability to reach goals can lead to feelings of low self-worth, which in turn can result in lost opportunities.  Pyschotherapy provides the opportunity to explore unresolved conflicts in a safe and supportive environment.

What happens in a therapy session?

It is important to feel connected with your therapist and begin to open up and honestly share your thoughts and feelings.  Once you are able to do this, the door to many issues begin to open and can therefore be consciously explored.  This is valuable in that the individual then has the opportunity to eliminate any thoughts, feelings and behaviors which prevent the achievement of personal goals connected to any number of relationships.

How long does therapy usually last?

In about 10 sessions many individuals begin to feel some change in how they feel, think and act. These changes typically mark the beginning of a journey.  Some types of emotional distress require more time than others.  A behavior which brings acute pain to the individual is more likely to be changed than those which have become part of a personality pattern that is not a source of significant pain.

How much does therapy cost?

Dr. Brown accepts major insurance plans which cover the majority of therapy costs.  Individuals are typically responsible for paying a relatively small co-payment between $10 and $20 per session.  Dr. Brown also accepts direct payments from individuals based on a sliding scale influenced by household income.
